We move from Vietnam to Honduras in this coffee journey, and it's a world of difference. Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is often overshadowed by its neighbors, but the country is quickly making a name for itself with its high quality coffee and high attention to sustainability. For CoffeeClick, Honduras is especially well-known, considering we source a flavorful component for our blends from Honduras.

History

Coffee was introduced to Honduras in the 18th century and here, too, coffee quickly grew to become a very important export product. Despite the local challenges that the country faces, such as varying climatic conditions, Honduran coffee farmers have done an excellent job. With innovative solutions and a great passion for coffee, they have not only solved the challenges, but have become a respected coffee country. Honduras is known for its diversity of unique coffee regions, and unusually, each region also has its own flavor profile. So everywhere the coffee is slightly different and you can taste that.

Two key regions:

Copán:

The coffees from this region are considered balanced coffees. You taste gentle flavors of chocolate and fruit. The coffee fields of Copán are beautiful and stretch over miles of hills. The coffee beans ripen quietly under the warm sun, creating a full and balanced flavor.

Marcala:

Marcala is diametrically opposed to Copán and offers a whole other dimension in flavors. You can recognize these coffees by their fresh acidity with a floral flavor. The coffee from this region is grown at high altitudes, which makes for a complex but excellent taste.

Sustainability and tourism

What really struck us about Honduras is the high level of attention to sustainability. A subject that is very important these days and is becoming increasingly important. Coffee farmers do their utmost to grow as green as possible. A lot of time is spent on organic or fair-trade cultivation. Needless to say, in this they pay close attention to high quality and fortunately this goes hand in hand. There are several plantations where farmers proudly display their sustainable methods. As far as we are concerned, an excellent development with an eye to the future!

Tourists who come to Honduras specifically for coffee have endless options. Something you should definitely not miss is the Coffee Route in Copán, one of the most popular destinations. Here you really get a good idea of Honduran coffee culture. Here you can walk through the huge plantations, listen to stories about the production process and, of course, enjoy some coffee tastings. During special tours, you really get to experience the passion and hard work that goes behind every cup of coffee.
