Welcome to our world journey through the coffee fields! We begin our journey in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopia is known for its rich coffee culture and unique flavors that coffee lovers around the world appreciate. When we visited Ethiopia, we were immediately captivated by this country's deep connection to coffee. Ethiopia, the country of coffee's origins, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of coffee. This is where it all began, and Ethiopia is still a leading player in the coffee industry with its unique and delicious coffees.

History

Legend has it that an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered coffee. He noticed that his goats became energetic and playful after eating red berries from a certain bush. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself and soon felt more energetic as well. This discovery quickly spread and thus coffee was born. This story, although perhaps not historically accurate, gives a romantic picture of the origins of coffee. It was extraordinary to see how this legend still plays an important role in local stories and traditions.

Three of the most famous regions are:

Sidamo:

Known for its complex flavors with notes of citrus and flowers. Sidamo coffee has a balance and depth that you notice immediately.

Harrar:

Produces a wild and fruity coffee with a distinctive earthy flavor. This coffee is often full-bodied and robust, perfect for those who like a strong cup.

Yirgacheffe:

Famous for its delicate floral aroma and bright acidity. This region produces coffee that is light and refined, with a distinct freshness.

Production methods & cultural significance

In Ethiopia, we saw how both traditional and modern production methods are used. Traditional methods include drying coffee berries in the sun on large beds, while modern methods often use more controlled processes such as "washing" coffee. This combination of techniques contributes to the diversity and complexity of Ethiopian coffee. This remains beautiful to behold.

One of the most memorable experiences what we experienced was the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. This social ritual, where coffee beans are roasted, ground and brewed for family and friends, symbolizes hospitality and community. The process can take hours, and it was amazing to see how coffee here is more than just a drink; it is a symbol of connection and tradition.
